Often, a story idea begins with a character. How can we create characters that resonate with readers? In this dynamic three-workshop series, participants will create unforgettable characters through hands-on writing, engaging, and collaborative activities. No experience necessary—just curiosity and imagination!

Students will leave each two-hour workshop with original writing they can be proud of, and discover their unique voices while learning essential storytelling skills.

By the end of the three workshops, writers will have developed fully realized characters, complete with strengths, weaknesses, secrets, and a compelling character arc that they can further elaborate on for their current and future works in progress.

 

Manuscript Submission opens: June 1st, 2026

Manuscript Submission deadline: August 13, 2026 (midnight), based on the first Day of Miami-Dade County Public Schools at https://laplumecontest.com/sign-up/submit/

Winners’ Announcement: End of October 2026

Awards Preparation: November 2026

Award Ceremony: First or second weekend of December 2026.

Online Creative Writing Workshops (for the 2026 recipients) will be scheduled between February and April 2027.
